Baptism

St. Mary's offers baptism to babies, young people and adults. It's our privilege to be involved in people’s lives at such an important time for them. Like other Anglican churches, we understand baptism (or christening, as some people call it) as the beginning of a person’s life with God in the church. God knows and loves us before we are ever aware of him and baptism is a time for celebration. This important service, sometimes called a Christening, is also a serious occasion when baptism promises are made before God and we would like to help you understand these promises so your celebration can be meaningful.

If you are interested in discussing baptism with us, please come along to Cafeplus+ which is held in the village hall from 9.30 - 12.30 on the first Sunday of each month, where you can meet one of the Baptism team. We will explain how a baptism is conducted at St Mary's and give you something to read about the meaning of baptism and the baptism service.

If you would then like to go ahead with a baptism, you will need to complete a baptism application form, available from the parish office 01844 291108. If you are new to the church, one of our ministers will arrange to meet with you at a service in church where you can experience worship with us. This will give you the opportunity both to meet members of the church and t become familiar with the church building. It will also be an opportunity to discuss possible dates. Children are welcome at our services, or may prefer to join in with Children's Church (our Sunday school) if they prefer.

You will also need to attend a Baptism Preparation evening. This is normally an evening with other people exploring baptism to ensure that you are happy with all that is asked of you. Once you are sure of the baptism promises we can confirm the date for the baptism. This will be during one of our Sunday morning services.

After the baptism we will do our best to give you help and encouragement so you can enjoy the support and fellowship of the church as fully as possible.

Baptism is a great opportunity for a whole family to join in the life of the local church if they don't already belong. We leave it to you to decide of course – but we encourage people to see baptism as potentially the start of a journey of faith with God, and with us at St. Mary's.

If you are not sure that baptism is appropriate for you, we also offer a service of Thanksgiving. Please contact us to find out more about this.

If you have already been baptised as a baby or a child and wish to consciously affirm your faith in God, we hold an occasional service called Confirmation which is for this purpose.
