We have been unable to fly a flag from the tower flagpole at St Mary’s church for some time. Following several safety inspections, we were advised that it is not possible to ensure a safe means of access to the flagpole. This has been a source of regret both for the worshipping congregation and for the many villagers who have contacted us. After extensive consultation with local and church authorities, permission has been granted to erect a new flagpole so that we are once again able to mark local and national occasions in this traditional way by flying the Union flag or St Georges flag.
New Rector Appointed
The churchwardens are pleased to announce that the Revd Cassa Messervy has been formally offered the position of rector of our benefice by the Bishop of Buckingham.
Cassa is presently vicar of Holy Trinity Church, Seer Green and Jordans and Assistant Area Dean, Amersham Deanery.
She will join us in Spring 2021.
A new phase in the life of our Benefice is beginning which no doubt will be exciting and challenging as God leads us forward.
The Churchyard Headstones
The Parish Council, which now has responsibility for the maintenance of the churchyard, has recently carried out "Topple Testing" on headstones. This was done by a registered contractor under the regulations governing the maintenance of churchyards. All headstones which were deemed to be unsafe have been laid flat by the contractor. A list of these is on display in the lychgate, along with a list of headstones which need attention.
It is normal practice to “topple test” headstones periodically, and very common for some to become unstable over time. Only qualified stonemasons are permitted to erect or maintain headstones in order to ensure the safety of visitors to the churchyard.
If you are concerned about a family headstone, please contact the Parish Council email@example.com 01844 292411.
